From the beginnings to today

The story of Van der Valk

From Pancake Baker to Multi-Hotelier

In 1929, Martinus and Riet van der Valk founded their small excursion restaurant "De Gouden Leeuw" in Voorschoten, Netherlands. Initially, mainly lemonade and coffee were offered there. Soon, Riet began preparing pancakes and other dishes for the guests. The good cuisine and hospitable atmosphere quickly made the place a popular meeting point.

With success, the company also grew. The couple founded their own butcher shop, among other things, to produce products for the restaurants and later hotels themselves. When the road at the original location was widened in 1939, a new building with ten hotel rooms was constructed in the same place. This laid an important foundation for further development.

From family tradition to international hotel group

A family that keeps growing

When Martinus van der Valk passed away in 1969, the family business already included 16 hotels and restaurants. In the following decades, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren continued the story. Today, Van der Valk comprises more than 100 hotels and restaurants.

To this day, each establishment is characterized by the special nature of a family business. Personal hospitality, quality, and good value for money are values that have accompanied Van der Valk for generations.

Internationally, the toucan has long become a distinctive symbol for Van der Valk. Whether in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, or the Caribbean: it stands for hospitality, relaxation, and special stays.

With the opening of the first Van der Valk Hotel in Moers in 1986, the history of Van der Valk in Germany also began. Since then, the offerings have continuously grown and become more diverse.
