In 1929, Martinus and Riet van der Valk founded their small excursion café "De Gouden Leeuw" in Voorschoten (Holland). Initially, only lemonade and coffee were sold, but Riet soon began to prepare pancakes and other treats for her hungry guests. The word about the good food and drink at reasonable prices spread quickly, and soon the café was too small and had to be expanded with a café.

In the meantime, a butcher's shop had also been established, as the couple aimed to produce and market the products required by their restaurants and later their hotels themselves. In 1939, when the road where the café was located was widened, the excursion café was demolished and a new building with 10 hotel rooms was built. Today the group also includes furniture stores, furniture factories, kitchen outfitters, and tour operators.

When Martinus van der Valk died in 1969, there were already 16 hotels and restaurants! The foundation for the family business was laid, as there was already a hotel or restaurant for every son and daughter of the large family. Over the years, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also joined the family business, which today includes more than 100 hotels and restaurants. Since the beginning, every business has been run by a family member, and it is not surprising that despite the enormous growth of the Van der Valk hotel chain, the personal and familial atmosphere has been maintained.

As early as 1986, the gate to a world of comfort and hospitality was opened with the opening of the first Van der Valk Hotel in Moers, Germany.
