From pancake baker to multi-hotelier

In 1929, Martinus and Riet van der Valk founded their small excursion restaurant "De Gouden Leeuw" in Voorschoten (Holland). Initially, they only sold lemonade and coffee, but Riet soon started preparing pancakes and other treats for her hungry guests. News of the good food and drinks at reasonable prices spread quickly and soon the establishment became too small and had to be expanded with a café.

In the meantime, a butcher's shop was also established, as the couple sought to produce and market the products needed by their restaurants and later their hotels themselves. When the road in front of the restaurant was widened in 1939, the excursion restaurant was torn down and a new building with 10 hotel rooms was built. Today, the group also includes furniture stores, furniture factories, kitchen outfitters, and tour operators.

By the time Martinus van der Valk passed away in 1969, there were already 16 hotels and restaurants! The foundation for the family business was laid, as there was already a hotel or restaurant for each son and daughter of the large family. Over the years, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also joined the family business, which today includes more than 100 hotels and restaurants. Since each business is managed by a family member, it is not surprising that despite the enormous growth of the Van der Valk hotel chain, the personal and familial atmosphere has remained intact.

As early as 1986, the gateway to a world of comfort and hospitality was opened with the first Van der Valk hotel in Moers, Germany. Since then, the Van der Valk family has established itself impressively in the German tourism market.
